01
Seven practical opportunities
Common areas include volume forecasting, delay prediction, route-planning support, exception prioritisation, document extraction, operational knowledge search and predictive maintenance.
Each requires different evidence and error tolerance. A summary assistant should not be assessed like a system influencing routes, working time or safety.
02
Data connects the operation
Relevant inputs may include orders, scan events, locations, time windows, capacity, calendars, weather, delay history and warehouse events. Establish reliable identifiers and source ownership first.
A missing scan does not always mean that physical movement stopped. AI cannot repair an event-capture process that is not understood.
03
People and exceptions
Operational conditions change quickly. Show the basis, confidence and consequence of a recommendation, and let a dispatcher correct it.
- refusal rules for missing data;
- exceptions requiring approval;
- logs of system and human decisions;
- a process for service unavailability;
- monitoring effects on customers and staff.
04
Pilot one decision point
Choose one decision, site, order type or part of the flow. Compare against the current approach on similar cases.
Success may be earlier delay detection, fewer manual contacts, better on-time performance or fewer incorrect escalations, with data and operating cost included.
